First Theros Block Draft
On May 2nd, I placed first in the first Theros Block draft that I played in. With Journey into Nyx just coming out officially that day it completed the Theros Block (Theros, Born of the Gods, and Journey into Nyx expansion packs) This block will be legal to play in standard now for about 2 years. Here is what I put together from the draft:
First Theros Block Draft

1 Doomwake Giant
1 Servant of Tymaret
1 Eater of Hope
1 Pharika’s Chosen
1 Warchanter of Mogis
2 Borderland Minotaur
1 Kragma Butcher
1 Oracle of Bones
1 Felhide Petrifier
1 Pensive Minotaur
1 Ragemonger
1 Akroan Crusader
Enchantments (2)
1 Ordeal of Erebos
1 Aspect of Gorgon
Instant (4)
1 Riddle of Lightning
1 Bile Blight
1 Spark Jolt
1 Lightning Strike
Sorcery (5)
1 Asphyxiate
1 Drown in Sorrow
1 Anger of the Gods
1 Flurry of Horns
1 Scouring Sands
Land (16)
8 Mountain
8 Swamp
Basically this was a Minotuar deathtouch deck. Also enough removal to get to round 6 and 7. The decks I went against were rather slow luckily as this deck is not the fastest either. I think though that drafting in this formant might turn out be a slower game. No god-packs were opened in this draft but many more are to come.
Of the 4 new cards that I played from Journey into Nyx, there are three that I think might have some standard viability. First off is Flurry of Horns. For {4R} this card may be a little expensive, but with enough removal and some mana dorks this card can make a Minotaur deck possible. Helping make a Minotaur deck viable also is Felhide Petrifier. With the ability to give all your Minotaurs deathtouch, it can keep your opponents at bay until you are ready to attack and at {3B} this card can be cast relatively easy. Riddle of Lightning for {3RR} is well worth the 5 mana in my opinion. Being able to scry 3 and then load the largest mana cost of the 3 at the top to ping a creature or player could be the final killing blow you need to win. With these additions the Minotaur deck in standard just might be something viable especially when the Return to Ravnica block rotates out.
